Here comes the SUN (insert Beatles music) You must protect yourself…let’s be truthful…any change in pigment is dangerous! We all want tan, gorgeous skin but those of you of a lighter persuasion need to protect yourself…because skin cancer is not beautiful or sexy.
Early, Regularly and Generously is how you should look at sunscreen!
Early: Apply sunscreen at least 20-30 minutes before leaving the house
Regularly: re-apply every 2 hours (more often if you are swimming or sweating)
Generously: The minimum serving size is 1oz…a shot glass amount (the tall one)
If you have ever stared zombie-like at the plethora of sunscreen choices…here are some hints:
SPF-Sun Protection Factor
UVA-Ultra violet rays (Violet A)-long wave
UVB-Ultra violet rays (Violet B)-short wave
Of course the higher the SPF the better but you are also looking for a Broad Spectrum sunscreen which contains both UVA & UVB protection. The UVA protects the skin against aging (we all need that) and cancer while the UVB protects the skin from burning (this is also not attractive and dangerous).
Most people only use a ¼ of the sunscreen they need and fail to re-apply…don’t be a dummy…put your drink down and re-apply. Fill up your whole hand and slather yourself…it’s fun!
Remember the old saying “Say it, don’t spray!” that applies here too…do not use the spray. There are concerns regarding the inhalation of the product…the zinc and other sciency stuff is bad if you inhale it!
The exception of course is if two, straight dudes are on vacation together…nobody wants to see you two rubbing each other down poolside….spray away…just cover your mouth & nose.
The man and I use Hawaiian Tropic SPF 50 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. It smells great and goes on like a moisturizing lotion.
BONUS: Hawaiian Tropic also makes a lip balm with 45 SPF that is luxuriously moisturizing and it tastes great…which helps you re-apply!!!
